2017 Pilgrimage to Assisi

A Pilgrimage to Assisi

Led by the Revd Dr Gordon Giles

23-27 October 2017

We have planned our Assisi pilgrimage in October when the weather should still be mild but cooler.

We spend four nights in the medieval walled city, home of St. Francis, set amidst the peace and tranquillity of the Umbrian countryside. Our visits include the famous Basilica of St Francis, the church of St Clare, Santa Maria degli Angeli and other pilgrimage sites in and around the town. We also enjoy a boat trip on Lake Trasemino to visit the Isola Maggiore where St Francis spent the 40 days of Lent.

This short pilgrimage will give us the chance to take in some of the most beautiful scenery in Tuscany, visiting a magnificent hill top town steeped in history with visits to many places of religious significance and devotion.

Tour Information

The cost of this five day pilgrimage is £925 per person sharing a twin/double room and includes many items normally extra on a holiday.

We spend four nights in Assisi at the Monastero San Giuseppe, a lovely religious guest house close to the Basilica of St Clare.

The tour is on a half board basis with buffet continental breakfast and evening meal served at our accommodation. We will travel in Italy by private air-conditioned coach and our Italian tour manager will meet us on arrival and stay with us throughout our journey.

Entrance fees are included as well as British air passenger duty and all other airport taxes.

Flights are with British Airways from London Heathrow airport to Pisa.

Extras: tips (£25 per person); insurance £39. It’s essential you have suitable travel insurance but you may have an annual policy or prefer another insurance. Our insurance has no age limit and you are not required to declare any pre-existing medical conditions. Single room supplement: £55. However, please read our note ‘Travelling Alone’ below.

Any special requests should be printed on the booking form. A deposit is payable now with the balance due eight weeks prior to departure.

Monday 23 October | TO ASSISI

Fly from London Heathrow Airport to Pisa with British Airways. Flight BA604 departs at 08:50 and arrives in Pisa at 12:05. We stop in Pisa for a lunch break with a short visit of Piazza dei Miracoli before our drive to Assisi. We stop at Santa Maria degli Angeli to visit the Porzuncolo before arriving in Assisi. Four night stay at the Monastero San Giuseppe.

Our guided walking tour of Assisi includes San Francesco Piccolo, the birthplace of St Francis; the Basilica of St Francis (lower and upper); the treasury and the St Clare’s Basilica and St Rufino Cathedral.

Morning visit to the monastic complex of San Damiano where St Francis heard the words ‘Rebuild my church’ followed by St Francis’ Hermitage where we spend time in the peace and tranquillity of his retreat. The rest of the day is free to explore Assisi at your leisure.

Today we explore Lake Trasimeno: sail across to Isola Maggiore where St Francis spent the 40 days of Lent in 1211. It’s the largest island on the lake and the only one which is inhabited. We have time to relax and reflect in this peaceful location with an opportunity to walk around the island as well as spend some time on the beach. In the afternoon we sail back to the mainland.

Friday 27 October | HOME

We drive to Pisa Airport for our return flight BA605 which departs at 13:05 and arrives back into London Heathrow Airport at 14:35.

There will be a fair amount of walking. If this is a concern, please talk to the tour leader or call the McCabe office.

To reserve your place on this tour please complete the enclosed booking form and send it with a deposit of £200 plus the insurance premium of £39, to the tour leader. Please make cheques payable to ‘McCabe Pilgrimages’.

Our pilgrimage is being organised in association with McCabe Pilgrimages, a company well-known in church circles and recognised as Britain’s foremost religious tour operator. McCabe has been responsible for organising hundreds of pilgrimages to the Bible Lands with churches from all over Britain for over 30 years. The company is a member of AITO and is fully bonded with the Civil Aviation Authority.

Many of our passengers travel alone and object to expensive single room supplements. McCabe Pilgrimages will accept individual bookings on a ‘guaranteed share’ basis. We charge the basic price and accommodate you with a person of the same sex also requesting shared accommodation. If we do not find someone to share with you, you will be accommodated in a single room at only 50% of the usual single room supplement. For single travellers who do require single accommodation this should be requested when booking and, if available, the normal supplement will be payable.

Please ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months after the time of this pilgrimage. If you need a new passport apply early as there can be considerable backlogs at the passport offices. Visas are not required for British or other EEC passport holders. No inoculations are required. We do, however, advise you to consult your doctor regarding your own personal requirements.

A unique feature of the McCabe recommended policy is that you will not need to call a medical help line to discuss health issues. Most pre-existing health conditions are covered as long as your doctor agrees that you are fit to travel. Travel insurance is arranged by Global Travel Insurance Services Ltd for McCabe Travel Ltd who are an Appointed Representative of Global Travel Insurance Services Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Our status can be checked on the FCA Register by visiting www.fca.org.uk or by contacting the FCA on 0845 606 9966. This Insurance is underwritten by ERV. ERV is authorised by the Bundesanstalt fur Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BAFIN - www.bafin.de) and the Prudential Regulation Authority and subject to limited regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority.

It has been specifically designed so that it covers all McCabe holidays; protecting you in full if you have to cancel and providing you with the very best and most effective protection if you are unfortunate enough to require medical attention whilst away.

Standard exclusions apply and are listed on the summary document. Please check that you are not affected by the Main Health Exclusions. You will not be covered for any ongoing tests or treatment of an undiagnosed condition, or for any terminal illness, or if you claim as a result of a condition arising within the past twelve months.

Note that you will pay an excess of £1,000 on any claim that results directly from a pre-existing medical condition. In our experience a very few claims result from pre-existing medical conditions. With this policy you are covered with no declaration of health required.

A full policy wording will be sent to you with confirmation of your booking, or ask us and we will send you a copy now. Full details are also on our website. If you would like more information or are unsure of any details, please call Global Travel Insurance Services Ltd for further advice on 01903 229 380. This insurance is only available to persons who are permanently resident in the UK.
